Intravitreal injection treatment for common retinal conditions, with monitoring tailored to each eye's response.

OVERVIEW

What are eye injections?

Eye injections are used to treat retinal conditions including wet macular degeneration, diabetic macular oedema and swelling caused by retinal vein occlusions.

Many retinal conditions need a series of injections because the medicine's effect reduces over time. Examination and OCT scans help guide the medicine used and the interval between treatments.

SYMPTOMS

Signs to look out for

Symptoms can overlap across conditions. An eye examination is needed to identify the cause.
  • Central blur or distortion from wet AMD
  • Swelling at the macula from diabetes
  • Vision loss after retinal vein occlusions
  • New or changing retinal fluid seen on OCT
  • A treatment response that needs ongoing monitoring

TREATMENT

Treatment and monitoring options

Your plan depends on the cause, stage of disease, wider eye health and what matters in daily life.

Conditions treated

Intravitreal injections may be recommended for wet AMD, diabetic macular oedema and retinal swelling caused by retinal vein occlusions. The medicine chosen depends on the condition and how the eye responds.

Treatment schedule

Some conditions need a series of injections followed by treatment at intervals based on examination and OCT scans. Your clinician will explain the plan and adjust it over time.

After treatment

Mild grittiness, a red patch or small floaters can occur. Follow the aftercare instructions and contact the clinic urgently for increasing pain, worsening redness, light sensitivity or a marked drop in vision.
